Getting a clean recording
Microphone distance dominates recording quality, and closer is almost always better. At 15 to 20 centimetres, the voice is loud relative to the room, so reflections and background noise are proportionally quieter. Doubling the distance drops the direct signal by about 6 dB while leaving room reflections roughly unchanged, which is why a recording made across a desk sounds hollow and distant.
Speaking slightly across the microphone rather than directly into it reduces plosives — the bursts of air on p and b sounds that produce a thump. A pop filter does the same job, and a folded cloth in front of the microphone is a workable substitute.
Room treatment matters more than microphone quality for speech. A bare room with parallel hard walls produces flutter echo that no processing removes convincingly. Soft furnishings, curtains, a bookcase, or recording in a clothes-filled wardrobe all help substantially, and the improvement from treating a room usually exceeds the improvement from upgrading a microphone.
Levels and the noise floor
Digital recording clips hard. Analogue tape saturated gracefully, but exceeding 0 dBFS in the digital domain truncates the waveform and produces harsh distortion that cannot be repaired. The correct approach is to leave headroom: peaks around −12 to −6 dBFS give a healthy signal with room for an unexpectedly loud moment.
Recording too quietly is a lesser but real problem. Raising a quiet recording afterwards raises its noise floor equally, so a signal recorded 30 dB too low arrives with audible hiss once normalised. Modern 24-bit recording gives enough dynamic range that conservative levels cost little, but there is still a floor.
Check what the noise floor consists of before recording. Ventilation, computer fans, refrigerators and fluorescent lighting all contribute steady noise that is easy to ignore while present and obvious in a recording. Switching off what you can, and recording thirty seconds of the room's own tone for later use, are both worth the time.
Where the recording lives, and consent
This recorder captures through the browser's media APIs and keeps the audio on your device. Nothing is uploaded, which makes it suitable for interviews, notes and drafts you would not want on a third-party server. Browser recording requires a secure context, which is why microphone access is only offered over HTTPS.
Recording other people is a legal matter and the rules vary sharply. Many jurisdictions permit recording a conversation you are party to with one participant's consent; others — including several US states, and much of Europe under differing rules — require all parties to consent. Recording without required consent can be a criminal offence as well as inadmissible as evidence.
The practical and ethical default is to ask, and to record the answer. Stating at the start that you are recording, and receiving agreement on tape, resolves the question and costs ten seconds. For interviews intended for publication, obtain explicit permission covering that use specifically, since consent to being recorded is not consent to being broadcast.
